Income. You made more than $200,000 in each of the last two years — or more than $300,000 together with a spouse or spousal equivalent — and you reasonably expect the same this year.

This is the commonest route and the one most people qualify under without knowing the threshold.

Net worth. Your net worth is over $1,000,000, on your own or with a spouse or spousal equivalent, not counting the value of your home.

The exclusion of the primary residence is the part people get wrong in both directions. An increase in the primary-residence mortgage within 60 days before purchase counts as a liability.

Professional licence. You hold a Series 7, Series 65 or Series 82 in good standing.

The SEC added this route and most forms still omit it. If you are a licensed adviser, you qualify on the licence alone, regardless of income.

Entity or trust. A company, partnership or trust with more than $5,000,000 in assets that was not formed to make this particular investment — or an entity in which every equity owner is an accredited investor.
